It doesn't. I can't actually remember the last time that I paid any attention to the top 20/40 chart.
If it wasn't for this place [Y!A/R&P] and the odd occation that I choose to watch TV, I'd probably be completely unaware of what's "in" in terms of music.

I'd hate for my music tastes to be influenced by what's on those charts - the majority of it is just cr*p.
If I do like a CD that features on the chart [I think VR's cd sold very well] then fine - but I /couldn't/ base what I listen to on it.

It all depends on whether or not I like the song. But overall, the Top 40 chart doesn't affect the way I buy CD's.

Yeah of course it good. It's a new world record. He beat the great Elvis Presley with his 7 hits in the top 40 when he passed away. He didn't get number 1 because of horrible Dance music

I haven't listened to radio for years now; it simply can't compete with what's in my head. My head doesn't have any of the blasted commercials, either! The inspiration for the CD's I last bought was the Music Choice channels available with digital cable. I would have that on my television tuned to the genre of choice and if anything came on that caught my ear, I would write it down (they offer artist and album titles during the song) and buy it when I got to my favorite record/CD store. So I would have to say that the Top 40 has no affect on my buying at all.

Screw the charts, they are rigged to the max by the companies to get the bands, they want, to be the NEXT BIG THING.
There most likely hasn't been a genuine #1 since the demise of the Beatles
