I'd recommend a cat. They're good company, but won't be super-demanding if the kids lose interest. You'll have to figure out who will commit to cleaning the litter box (probably Mom) every day, which will take 5-10 minutes. Keep in mind also that the cat may still be alive by the time that your youngest heads off to school, so this pet could really be yours!

I can certainly recommend that a rabbit will be a bad pet.
Rabbits are very territorial, and will bite and scratch intruders once it hits puberty (at around 4 months old); they also hate to be held or picked up and they can live for 10 or more years - it'd probably be less hassle getting a dog, at least then if/when they get bored it can easily be re-homed.

I would recommend researching very very very carefully and making really really serious considerations BEFORE getting a dog, ANY dog. The commitment is very long and will outlast the time that they live in your household. When they go to college, who will take care of animals that outlive the period that your kids live in your home? YOU.
Read this carefully, it's a pretty good site:

a dog, a nice, fun, loving pet that would be great for all ages, i would either recommend a lab, german shepard, labradoodle (lab and poodle mix, great hypoallergenic family dog), bull dog, or a golden retriever, they're all great family dogs.

a dog but check into the breeds as some are better with kids than others.
