it started manufacturing on April 1.

i doubt a joke would make it to manufacturing. Do you know how many rounds of design and testing a product must go through to be manufactured.

I owned one, it was more of a "bad luck piece" than a joke.

Granted, it was yellow but, I never thought of it as a lemon....it just seemed to bring on all kinds of odd things happening to it.

First a motorcycle ran into it while we we gassing up...then an errant wind caught the hatch back and pitted the whole car..and on and on and on...this went on the first three months we had it....and you could hear the gas "sloshing" in the tank when you turned corners...

Nothing I found supported this claim.

It is most likely that this is a post hoc claim - meaning that this story was made up after the fact, because it fit the reputation of the car.

no it was a typical economy car of the time period. and a hatch back that people wanted.

there was pinto as well by ford and vega by chevy....

i doubt it, i think it looks similar to the Nissan fairlady when they first came out
