Personally I try to avoid licensed characters because I don't want to push commercialism...they will insist on cartoon characters on everything soon enough...an idea I thought of for you is bugs...you could have all sorts of things that are both for boys and girls.

I had a Princess/Car party when my girls were 4. I got 1/2 the cake girly princess and 1/2 the cake Cars. I split the table down the middle 1/2 princess and 1/2 Cars. They are individuals, they should have the theme they want 50/50!

You could do a combined party that is "Little Mermaid" for her and "Pirates" for him. They are very similar in decoration, but different enough to make it truly special. The cakes could even work together as one large one with an undersea section and a pirate ship on top. Creativity abounds with kids' parties. I love doing cakes for my boys...My oldest son had a pirate party and we turned the living room into a pirate ship with a gangway and even a main mast made out of an old carpet tube. It was so much fun. You can even have a treasure hunt with a map that you run around the neighborhood searching for treasures... Encourage all the guests to dress up to really MAKE the occassion.

You could do a kingdom theme he could be the Prince and her the princess. I do cakes for a lady that has boy girl twins and she always has 2 cakes one in girl colors and one in boy colors. They always turn out great.

wow..raise your kids equal please. Don't throw a party for the little girl and just leave the little dude hanging..do it equal or have 2 different parties. It's not fair to have a party decked out in girl stuff just for her but have nothing for the guy...
and a 90% girl party with 10% boy isn't good enough..i mean 50-50 for both

I have a twin sister and when I was younger my parents threw me a hawaiian party. Everyone loves the beach so you can make it cute for your daughter and fun for your son as well.

Could you do Dora and Diego? Some of the Dora stuff I've seen has her dressed as a Princess, so you could go super girly for her and adventure/animal for him. Its also pretty easy to find Dora/Diego since they are really popular right now.
