Timing belt broke on my 1993 honda del sol. Im assuming nothing else was damaged because it broke while sitting idle at a light. Does anyone know cars well enough or have had this happen to them to throw a # at me... and heck i'll sell it if anyones interested..lol

well, you have to do is pay about $400 - $500 to install a new timing belt, and water pump. After the belt installation, you would need to get a engine compression test ($100) to make sure that there was no engine damage. If compression test shows good engine condition, then you are done.

Otherwise, you will have to tear least the cylinder head and rebuild. That is going to cost ye. around $1500. And if after tearing the head, piston damaged is detected (you can only tell when you lift up the cylinder head) then you are looking at short block rebuild (another $1500)

Bent valves happen even at idle, it doesn't take high rpms. Either check valve stem height or better yet do a cylinder leak test. If it was my car I'd pull the head and take a look at the pistons for sign of valve contact, any little nick in the piston and you need to take the valves out and spin them in a drill to check for wobble. Replace the bent ones.
