Stick with Vista. On brand new laptops such as your 1720, you should not have any Vista related issues such as slowness or anything like that. Because modern laptops already have a ton of power and memory. You might have issues (my 1520 did) but it wasnt related to vista, it was a hardware issue that made my pc slow down until I fixed it. But I think you are wanting to go back because XP is more familiar and vista looks soo different. But thats just it, XP looked different back when everybody was on Windows 98, not so much different but still had a different look. Vista is here now and the stuff preloaded on your laptop will work with Vista fine. You might need Vista ready hardware in some cases such as an old webcam or some other piece. other things such as mice and monitors, cameras should work fine. Once you get used to the look and feel of Vista, its a pretty good OS, and your 1720 should handle it fine. But if you still want to go back to XP, you need a copy of it and Id go to www.notebookreview.com and go to the dell section and get the full details of Vista to XP on your model, so they will help you on the XP versions of the drivers you will need for the 1720. I don't know why everyone else is saying you can't do it. The first guy is right. Get a copy of XP and boot from the cd, then you can format your hard drive, which wipes everything, and install XP. I in fact just did this myself. Updating drivers is not hard, and is something you have to do everytime you install a new OS. You simply go to the various websites for the hardware you need to update, find your model, and download the newest driver. It pays to do this on occasion without even installing a new OS.

You cant, without a ton of hassle.

Vista emits drivers to your hardware that tell them to look for Vista software. So even if you were to get XP on there somehow, you would still have to go through the trouble of rolling back your drivers, and I do not recommend that.

I have tried 7 different ways to get Vista off and XP on, and none of them have worked. Microsoft really did it this time.

If you have already registered your copy of Windows XP on a different computer then you may run into licencing problems.

I would stick with Vista as it is going to be a lot less hassle in the long run.

You have to get xp cd and a product key, but if you decide to revert you will lose all your programs and any files in your documents.
I dont see why you would want to though, I havent had even the slightest problems. I actually have less. Maybe you might want to learn how to use it better than going back to xp.

Why did you buy it with Vista? There are still ways you could change it to XP before you order it. The only way to change it now is to buy separate software for it and install it all over again.
And why won't you leave it on Vista? To me, Vista is better!

you gotta go spend a hundred+ dollars at best buy, or somewhere like that, to buy a new xp software package. then you take it home and install it on your computer. its a bummer, but thats how it works.
