In 2008 I'd like to read all of Jane Austen's novels, but I'm not sure where to start. What would be the best order to read them in? The order she wrote them in? Something else? Thanks!!

I'd like to read all 7 of her novels Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, and Lady Susan. Not necessarily in that order, of course.

I'd suggest to start with "Northanger Abbey" because the novel really shows Jane Austen's personality and sense of humor. Then I would move on to "Pride and Prejudice" because "Northanger Abbey" would have really warmed you up to catch all the humor in the book. Then read "Mansfield Park" to give you an idea of the diversity of Jane Austen's characters. After that go for "Sense and Sensibility" for a good contrast to "Mansfield Park's" calm and quiet heroine. After that I think you should read "Persuasion" to see the the effects of love lost and love come back. Then you should read "Emma" because her story is something of a culmination of all Jane Austen's books put together in a very entertaining way, and then, last but most definitely not least, you should read "Lady Susan" because the book is just icing on the cake of all Austen's works .
Enjoy!:-)

Well Lady Susan is one of her juvenile works, and is very different from her other novels, especially as its an epistoliary, so maybe you should read other novels of hers first, and see if you like them enough to move on to reading Lady Susan.
I suggest you start with Pride and Prejudice, to kinda acquaint you with her style, then move on to Persuasion and Emma.........these are my three favourites.
After that you could go for Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park and finally Sense and Sensibility, which was a good novel, but for some reason my least favourite among her works.
And when you've read all these (including Lady Susan) you can read Love and Friendship, her other juvenile novel, and Sanditon and The Watsons, both of which she died without completing but were completed by other people, and were pretty good!!!

In this case, it doesn't matter that much, but I would recommend starting with Pride and Prejudice and ending with Emma. Those two are my favorites (and probably most people's), so you have a good chance of getting hooked at the beginning and knowing as you continue that you have something even better to look forward to.

I agree that you should definitely start with Pride and Prejudice. Although I think that you should end with Emma which I believe is the worst of her books. I love all the others and Emma just pales in comparison.

So this is what I suggest to you:
1. Pride and Prejudice
2. Sense and Sensibility
3. Mansfield Park
4. Northanger Abbey
5. Persuasion
6. Lady Susan
7. Emma

Take it or leave it. They are all excellent works! Enjoy reading them.

while reading a book, you're stimulating the human brain. You make your literacy and reading skills and you simply along the way, become more literate. Despite having today's modern technology, you still need to be able to read.
While you're watching t.v. can be good fun, it isn't doing anything to your brain.
