Back when my wife and I first moved in together before we were married we hardly had any money. A good week was having $30 for groceries. We scrounged and ate oodles of noodles a lot. We were hungry quite often. We learned to appreciate all we have earned now. We got through it, and we got through it together. Tough times can teach you character. I have learned the value of a hard days work. I appreciate everything more. I have found that people that have everything handed to them do not appreciate what they have. There is nothing as satisfying as making it on your own. The day we bought our first house I never felt so grown up. I learned I can do it.

I would not wish the experience on anyone. I'm not sure about "character building" but it does teach you to appreciate things more. I never went hungry...but I lived off of ramen noodles for a very long time. It wasnt fun. I have a stocked pantry all the time now wouldn't eat ramen noodles if someone paid me to.

I wasn't so poor that I couldn't eat, but there were sometimes several months where all I could afford was ramen, which to this day is still sold in packs of something like 20 for $2.99 -- fortunately I was smart enough to drink a lot of water as well, because the flavor packets are full of sodium.
This was about 15 years ago, in my heavy drinking days. I wasn't making much money, and used a lot of it for drinking. Oy vey . . .

Yes. I was working at a hotel at the front desk and it was the only time in my life I stole. I took the breakfast stuff- some coffee, bread, little danishes, and the little peanut butter individual serving sizes and also the jellies like that. Then I bought eggs and more bread and my sister and I lived on eggs and bread and PB and J's. The coffee was for her. I did manage to get some tea bags and sugar also. That was it. Then my Mom came out to visit and saw our cupboards and fridge empty and spent 400$ at our local grocery and $800 at Costco to fill us up with food. We were still eating off that food 2 years later. I sure learned to tighten my belt in those times and yes, I still love PB&J's. LOL Good times, man, good times!

Doing that right now. It's not something you should want to do. Believe me, it's not very nice. Eating one meal every other day just to be able to afford paying the rent for a crappy apartment. Knowing everything you save up will be gone at the end of the month and you have to go through it all over again next month. It's a spiral you can't get out of. I hope you never go through it.

No I have never not had enough money to buy food. I have been lucky. I have at times not had enough to pay all my bills, but food has always come first, my children have never gone without and neither have I. My hubby said his family have at times, when he was younger, he said the only thing it helped him with, was he's happy to be given anything to eat (except tomatoes) he Say's not having loads of money has made him Not a fussy eater, unlike my kids.

Nope. There are many other ways that can build character. I don't agree that everyone should experience this. Hunger can play both with your body and mind and can produce negative results if experienced often. There are other tests of virtues that people go through, like going through trials that involve emotional and mental tests which can make them better persons.
