I imagine the cost will vary depending on the area you live in.

I had mine done about 10 years ago so the price I paid will not be of much use today but it was £1100 so I'd put a few hundred on top of that now.

WHY O WHY do people think that because there is no felt on there roof that that is the reason their roof is leaking. These type of roofs have been on for years and years. Felting roofs only came to the fore in the 40's or 50's and basically all it does is 1. stops draughts in the roof space and 2. Gives the roofer more time to replace the roof i.e. if it rains its watertight when he goes home and he is not dependant on dry weather. No. 1 is a problem because it stops ventilation in the roof, hence all types of breathable felt nowadays and soffit and eaves vents. I have been a roofer for 25 years and have stripped roofs where the original slaters have signed and dated the roof 200 years ago and these are the roofs without felt. The sarking was in sound condition as were the nails. The only reason it had to be re roofed was the slates had come to the end of their life. Get a decent roofing contractor in, get him to tell you what slates you have on your roof. Welsh and Burlington being the best. If their is no felt as you say its an old roof and will need attention but maybe not re roofed. If it does and you can afford it get Welsh slates and not Spanish as you can be sure of qualitity and longevity

I'm answering this question assuming you live in the UK ...so..when your house was built ..there was no such thing as felt ..and if the roof is properly slated then you do not need it to be watertight ...so.there must be a problem with the slates ! get a decent roofer in and he will sort it and it should not cost the earth ..the only advantage felt does is keep it mainly windproof and its a second defence against leaks ..but if the slates are good then you should be OK ...after all i bet the house is at least 100 years old and the roofs been all right up to now

i would say your looking at around £ 2000 just to refelt the roof, it will also depend on how badley the tiles are damaged or worn!! because if ther old they will probably need replacing, and it would make sense to put new tiles on the roof now while the scaffolds up.because you will get some damage to tiles when you take them off thats guarantied! but when you put the new roof on,it will add alot of money to price of the house, its a good investment! probabbley £ 3000 aprox
