Two different things....You said the man has a 'harem', the Woman has 'friends'.
A better comparison is when the Woman owns a 'stable', then She is the Mistress or G-ddess (as it SHOULD be)

You'll get some smart-**** answers to this, but the truth is that it is a biological hangover. Men have had it good in this respect and some men can't comprehend how a woman could do the same, so he invents a derogatory name for it and calls it unnatural.
For those who actually know anything about biology and animal behaviour, they also know that a female generally has more suitors.

First of all, good question. Its cool that a guy would be aware of this double standard.
The reason lies in evolution. Men condemn women for having male friends because (for most of human history), paternity tests were nonexistant. The only way to be *sure* the kid you were raising was yours was to keep her away from all rival males. Because the world is still male-dominated, males still largely get to decide our social sanctions..........
Of course, throughout most of human history, a woman would be in danger if she lost her man (he was her protector and provider). Whereas men, if they lose their girl, will have to look for someone else to pass on their genes with...........but they won't be killed or starve. That's why I reckon females tend to be more jealous and recover from breakups more slowly........

Most women want to be in a loving relationship in a safe enviroment to raise their children. It is a typical maternal instinct.

Because men want to impregnate all the women they can while she stays faithful to him to insure his genes get passed on. Treating promiscuous women like criminals is societies way of making sure women adhere to these rules. Thus words like whore, slut, tramp etc.

A woman getting a bunch of men to chase her around doesn't require any work on her part.
However, a man getting a bunch of women to chase him around shows skill and intelligence.

It's because of society. I personally don't think of women who do that as whores (but if any person does it while in a relationship, he or she is a bad person), but I also think this is the worst problem women in the west have.
