The other answers are correct but I would like to take the answer a bit further. I am sure the original idea was mainly to make a pencil so it would not roll off of a work bench. But the design provides many other benifits which I think have pretty much come along for the ride.
Such as
The wider flatter pancil makes for a wider lead which is much stronger and will hold up much better in "pencily abusive" environments. They are much more durable than a regular pencil.
Sure you could always use a fatty pencil but it will roll. Not only that a fatty pencil will not fit behind your ear... Carpenter pencils fit behind ears and under hats better.
They do make pencil sharpeners specially for carpenter pencils. But in most cases it ends up just being another tool in a tool bag already overfilled with tools.
I love my carpenter pencils. You can never have enough.

tell your son that flat is a carpenters friend. but realy they are stronger, easy to fallow a straight edge , dont roll off of your material, slide along surfaces while scribing, easy to grab and manouver with gloves on, and alows for bold company logos to be printed on them. You will also find that the edges are at 45 degrees, more resons for that, but its beside the question and the graphite is very hard, a round pencil with the same core would hold up almost as well.

They are flat so you can project your mark more accurately while scribing along an edge. Also more lead is visible in the wider tip so they don't need sharpening as often as round pencils. But I don't like them myself. They tend to lead to slacker tolerances.

the answer before was right plus there wide and flat so they can put them behind their ears or in their pouch etc. and also why they're so wide is because when they mark stuff like shingles it shows up better then if you were to use a number 2 pencil

They are flat so they do not roll off and when turned sideways to mark a line. The line is sharper and thinner to mark the cut or what ever. Wide so that you may hold on to them better.
