I book gigs for my band. Find the clubs that would have bands of the same genre as the band you know. The best bet is to call ahead or stop in and find out who books the acts. Have a CD in hand and any other promotional materials the band has (bio, set list, references, picture, contact name and number etc) and then talk up the band. Explain the bands following or promotion techniques and ask what the club does as far as promotion if anything. Let the person know when you will be in contact with them again (give them a week or so to listen to the cd) and then call or stop by again and ask them if they've had a chance to listen and would they like to book the band. (You should have a negotiating price in mind, ask the band what they normally make and its never a bad idea to ask a little over that amount)
Ask for a date until you get one. Have a calendar ready to know what the bands schedule is. Once you get the date start promoting it. Welcome to band mgmt 101..lol....Good luck :)

Just wanna add on something fairly important to oracleofohio's answer.

When it comes to overblown promotion, most venue event coordinators have seen and heard it all.

Make sure that you are able to present a LIVE audio recording (Video works better yet) of the band. The person you are trying to sell wants to see and hear the band as they really are. If you present any recording that is too slicked up that the band can't represent live, somebody's gonna end up with their tail between their legs.

Get them to send you a demo and then drop it off at all the local clubs that they would want to play at. Then leave your contact information, just get their band name out there and let people know that they are available to play shows.

why don't you either try calling the local clubs yourself, or put an ad in the paper advertising them as available.

IT TAKES A LOT TO GET INTO CLUBS TO PERFORM FIRST THEY SHOULD TRY GETTING SOME GIGS PLAYING FOR PARTIES TO GET A LITTLE BIT OF A NAME FOR THEMSELVES AND USE TO PLAYING FOR CROWDS , GO TO OPEN MICS AND TRY DOING A COUPLE OF BENEFITS , THAT HELPS OUT TO.. THEN TRY TO GET SOME GIGS AT THE CLUBS..............
HOPE THIS HELPS......IF NOT SORRY...
