I'm a mother, and each of my kids has four names (not including the surname) and when they were in trouble, they could tell how MUCH trouble by the number of names I used ... first name ... not bad ... first and second name ... bad ... first through third name ... you're definitely going on restriction ... first through fourth name ... restriction will last until you are eighty. Now my kids are grown and having kids of their own ... their kids all have four names, and my kids use the same 'number of names' in their discipline. Why? Because the worse the 'crime' the worse the anger ... and remembering and saying all those names takes the edge off the anger and allows 'good sense' to come in and moderate the exchange.

Yes. This is a common practice and using your usual or shortened name puts them within a friendly position - almost as a peer. When your parents use a more formal term - say your full name or first and second name - this is to try and engender a distance from you reinforcing respect. It's a very strange thing and as I did it to my kids when they were naughty, I cannot say if it was as a result of my upbringing or a sort of hard-wired response that is inbuilt into humans, dormant until they have naughty kids. I wonder if anyone has researched this?

There is no easier way to know that you're in trouble than to hear your full name called out in "that" tone of voice. My mother did it with my brother and I, and I do it with my kids too. I even do it with my dog. When he hears "Maxwell P. Fartdog!!!" he knows it's time to go hide.

Everyone's parents react differently.
My parents usually make me feel like i did something bad but at the end it turns out they were bluffing.

Yes, they used to call the roll too, meaning they would go through brothers and sisters names before they got to mine. That's when I took off so they couldn't catch me.

haha, my parents do it more with my sister's name then with mine. I think they choice that name because its an easy name to yell across the house.

No. I don't get in trouble anymore - she can't say anything about what I do because I pay her bills! Finally, *I* am in control!!! HAAAA HAAAAA!!!
But when I was younger it was my first and middle names.
