Is it common for a woman to describe her boyfreind as a significant other or is the woman describing a girl friend as a significant other,

I live with my boyfriend and have referred to him as my significant other when I've verbally RSVP'd for certain parties or events. Though I feel it's a basic universal term, I've been told that mostly it is used to describe commited gay couples.

Boyfriends, fiances, or husbands. I never called my girlfriends my significant other.
