Trying to give a baby medicine is so hard.....Anyone have any tips on how to do it.? I have also been trying to feed my little guy and he is not really interested in his bottle.......any suggestions on how to make sure he gets enough fluids. The Dr told me that as long as he was drooling a lot and had tears he was not dehydrated. Just wondering what others have done.......this is my first sick baby experience and just want some ideas for next time.

At your local drugstore (or target, walmart, etc) they have lots of things to help give a baby medicine. The most helpful one looks like a pacifier with a syringe connected to it.
Personally, when giving medicine to a baby, I cradle them back, and use a syringe. I put the syringe in the back corner of the mouth and give a few drops at a time.
As for hydration, pedialyte is probably the best way to go. It has the right fluid/electrolyte balance for baby. Offer that often, and keep offering formula. But know that baby's appetite will improve when he feels better.

With the bottles all you can do is give little and often. my doc even suggested watering the formula down, but you would have to speak to your doc about that first. or just try water because ive foundwhen my kids are ill they really arent interested in food and only little bits of fluids every now and then. with the medicine - if your baby is under 6 or 7 months i would suggest using a seringe. it has dosage on the side so you know how much your giving. if the child is older then a spoon will do. my daughter was ok at having meds through a seringe but my son (17 weeks old) hates it! you can buy medicine dummies that you put the medicine in the top and the baby sucks it through the teat. these i found were quite good. they are available at most chemists and shops.

How old is the baby? My son was not fond of the bottle either. I just fed him a little bit at a time all day long. When he reached about 7 months I tried a sippy glass (the ones with the lid) and he took to it not a problem. I dont know how to fully discribe the cup but it is the ones with the lid that has a lip with the holes in it. As far as medicine goes depending on the age I disguised it with jam or honey.

Using a syringe to squirt the medicine in the cheek near the throat usually helps.
Sometimes putting it in a bottle nipple (not the whole bottle) can cause the icky liquid to skip the tongue.
You can give Popsicles (of frozen breastmilk or formula if you prefer, or just normal ones as baby is over 6 months). Freezies. You can somewhat freeze formula or breastmilk and make it into a slushy and spoon feed it. Jello, pudding and soup also all count as fluids.

Slowly squirt the medicine into the side of the mouth a little bit at a time. I know if I try to give it to my son too fast or too much at a time he chokes or spits it out. As far as knowing if they are dehydrated also make sure he has enough wet diapers and they are clear not yellow. My son had a stomach issue and his pedi suggested to give him a couple bottles of clear pedialite cuz it would be a little easier on his stomach.

You have to make sure the medicine is specified for his age group. I found thtat if the baby is too young, i just to smaller proportions and it works just fine but you have to be careful how much you give. Just take the dropper and squeeze it into the side of his mouth next to his cheek., (its easy when the baby is laughing because its like a straight shot). Then tilt his head back just a little to make sure it goes down.

My baby is sick quite often and he is only 3 1/2 months old. I give him medicine out of a dropper or if it is really nasty then mix it in a little juice. If it is granules like mine then I have to mix it in food. He might not like the nipple you are using on the bottle. My son loved this one bottle so we bought tons of them. Then one day he wouldn't use it anymore. So now we use Avent and he hasn't had any problems with them. Good Luck.

Use a medicine syringe to dose with, try jello water and pedialyte for fluids. Be patient and try not to get to anxious your baby can feel that and become more agitated as well. I hope your baby feels better soon. Take this opportunity for lots of cuddles.

You have the medicine dropper/syringe that came with the medicine, right? Just squirt the medicine into the side of the cheek, not too far back so your baby doesn't choke. My daughter loved taking medicine because it's usually berry flavored.
