Many of the answers you received here are part of what fuels violence in prison. The only difference between an offender and some of those who answered here are that they haven't gotten caught YET!

At best, there should be more psych' evals before someone is sent to prison.

Secondly, those who serve as correctional officers should be required to undergo psych evals as well, be required to have at least an Associate degree in criminal justice, and then be required to spend 30 days in an inmate invironment BEFORE being allowed to work in a correctional facility.

One of your answerer's said something to the effect that every one in prison is violent. Only someone with 2-dimensional thinking would say something like that.

As long as humanity is present on this planet, there will always be criminal activity. Therefore there will always be a need for prisons. With that said, put the violent, high-risk inmates in one place. Keep the older, long term inmates AWAY from the young and first time offenders. This would go a long way in diminishing prison violence.

Stay out of prison!

Seriously! The prison system is so corrupt these days that it would be impossible. The only way it would be possible is if EVERYONE was in solitary confinement! Other than that just pray that some brave lawmaker will put pressure on the prison wardens to do something about the problem!

1. Remove all entertainment except books. You can choose from the Bible, Koran, Torah, etc...

2. Restricted diet. Bowl of cereal & coffee for breakfast. Sandwich & water for lunch. Bowl of soup and piece of chicken for dinner.

3. Chain gangs. Work from 8:00 am until 6:00 pm with 1/2-hour for lunch. Hard labor!

4. Solitary (cell) confinement for the rest of the day.

5. One hour of free time on Sunday for religious worship.

That's it. No more coddling of prisoners. It isn't a hotel, it's a JAIL.

Decreasing the amount of people we put in prison. We can start by not sending non-violent drug offenders to years in Prison. The current American prison system is for profit. People are becoming filthy rich, former Oklahoma governor Frank Keating, by other people's incarceration. As long as Bourgeoisie are in control of the justice system prisoners rights will never be addressed.

Hello.... Prisons are full of violent people.

That's kind of like asking what can be done about barking at the pound.

To be honest I think it would be a good idea to allow prisoners to have nice items sent to them, that way they would have a reason not to fight(avoiding having there things confiscated)
