how many wars are there currently happening in the world today?

i am writing an essay about war for my As level religious studies. if anyone can help me with the answer it would be greatly appreciated

Good grief, that is hard to say. So much of the fighting happens in low grade civil wars, or cross-border terrorism. What would qualify right now as a war? Here's a short list of pretty hot conflicts going on right now:
1. Iraq (vs US)
2. Afghanstan (vs NATO)
3. Somalia (vs Ethiopia)
4. Sudan (internecine)
5. Columbia (drug-fueled rebellion)
6. Congo (internecine but with several neighbouring countries involved)

There are plenty of other conflicts (about 30 listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ongoing_war). Some examples of wars that are smoldering are Chechnya and Kashmir.
