"Do you wanna pop my clutch?"
"Should we put 4 on the floor?"
"My, what a large stick shift you have."
"Is that a shifter in your hand, or are you just happy to see me?"
Something like that is funny and lets him know that you are interested.

Don't ask him anything you don't understand the answer to, it will make you look foolish and desperate.
Again, don't get technical unless you've actually done your homework. You can ask him to tell you all about it, though, then ask him to explain things you don't understand. He might get all puffed up and proud of that!
The point is to appear genuinely interested, so smile, nod, and keep eye contact.
But if you're not really interested in cars (as I am), just compliment its looks or color or sound or ride...if you actually like it.

Don't fake it.
You can let him know that you don't know a whole lot about cars. If you want to learn, ask him to teach you some stuff.. If you get interested, then great.
My ex was a mechanic and absolutely loved cars.. Until I dated him I knew nothing.. I didn't even know what side the gas was on, since I didn't have my licence.. But he always talked about it and he taught me a bunch of stuff, and I absolutely love cars now. =] I can't get enough of them lol

You know you are the first guy that I think I could trust to tell me something about a car if I am going to get one
Can I count on you to help me if I do?

It's best to not act like you know something about cars when you don't. He might start speaking men (a language not very many woman know).

Just ask him what it is about his car that made him choose this one over another. Word it carefully, so he doesn't think you are putting his car down.
