Ok...I've seen the movie about 5 times now, and I loved it, but I'm confused about 1 thing. When Katherine Winter (Hillary Swank) first got to the town, and throughout much of the movie, it seemed that the town was in general disagreement about the plagues (and whether or not they actually were plagues), the cause of the plagues, and such. Was all of this just a ruse to lure Katherine to come to the town to investigate? I understand all of the rest, but that's the only thing that really, really confuses me, and it's really bugging me!

Right, and that part I got, but some of them seemed to believe that she was 'in league' with her mother or "one of their degenerate friends" (to quote the town's mayor), but then, later in the movie, we find out that they were all in the same cult with the girls mother, and were all together in the room with her mother to try to sacrafice the girl when she ran and her brother ended up dead. This is one of the things that's confusing me so much. Thanx!

Not exactly. The plagues were apparently real but their attitudes towards the plagues and their origins were the ruse, which I do believe they adopted in an effort to lure her in for whatever reason. I personally found the curve-ball ending to completely ruin the movie.

The Cult started with the man who came and got Hilary Swank. He was from a different town and taught these people about it.

They all seemed pretty convinced that the little girl had something to do with it. At least that's what I picked up.
