Lots of things. Aside from the usual - trying to balance work, school, and social or family life, difficult classes, financial concerns, a sense of responsibility to their family who are sacrificing a lot for them to be there, I've had students with major health crises, students who lost loved ones (just this semester, I know of one whose boyfriend died and one whose brother was killed in a car accident, along with several who lost friends), students who were raped or otherwise attacked, etc. The same stressors which hit the rest of the population apply to students.

Being OVERWHELMED is the number 1 stressor. Some students take on a full course load not knowing for each class you need at least 4 hours of study time. That is almost impossible if you have to work full time as well.

Top five sources of stress are change in sleeping habits, vacations/breaks, change in eating habits, increased work load, and new responsibilities.
College students, especially freshmen are a group particularly prone to stress due to the transitional nature of college life. They must adjust to being away from home for the first time, maintain a high level of academic achievement, and adjust to a new social environment.

Course load, difficulty of class, trying to strike a balance between college fun and studying, relationships, being independent for the first time, learning new responsibilities as an independent -- credit cards, renting a house/apt, car, grocery shopping & cooking, paying utilities, budgeting money, getting a part time job. List goes on.

There is NO reason for a student to have stress if they keep up with their studies and homework.
