Though the Philippine islands are in Asia, Filipinos as well as Hawaiians, Fijians, Samoans etc made a huge effort to categorize themselves as Pacific islanders. Though Filipinos are technically Asian, they are considered Pacific Islanders. Though they have Spanish last names, this is due to the Phillipine Islands being conquored by Spain.

My Filipina sister-in-law believes the non"tribes" type (majority) are descended from Greek and Romans shipwrecked there 2000 years ago. That is why they are taller and fairer than tribespeople and she claims language related proves it. I can find no evidence for this belief, but it is certainly interesting. I would like to learn more about the linguistics of the Philipines, but know several laguages are totally unrelated, so may be multiple origins.
Most Fillipinos I know claim to be Asian. Never heard any claim Hispanic probably because they have long memories for mistreatment. The Tagalog language is very close to Spanish, but probably not an original tongue. Most use hispanic names too. I will let them know they are supposed to call themselves 'Pacific Islanders' ;+)

Hispanic no because they do not speak spanish (they speak tagalog, the native language of the phillipines), they have spanish surnames because of the spanish inquisition but that's about it.
Most consider themselves pacific islander or asian in my experience. They have predominantly asian features and heritage although their nose is significant of islander heritage.

I think they are, but I know a few of them and they say that they aren't asian. I guess to each it's own.
