I've decided that it's time to upgrade the ol' Playstation nonumber and spring for a new gaming console. The question is, which one? I've heard that the Wii is great for families and that younger kids will enjoy it. (I have an 8 and 5 year old). I like the PS3 for the Blu Ray player that is built in and I also understand that the Xbox probably has the best games.

I enjoy RPG games like Oblivion, the Neverwinter Nights/D&D-type games the most.

Which is the best console for what I'm looking for, all-around playability, fun and games with the added value of high-end DVD play?

If you want RPG type games, PC is still a strong bet.

Contrary to what some have said, the 360 has a quite strong library of RPG's, almost all of the current console RPG's are being developed for the 360, either exclusively or in conjunction with other platforms. I'd say that's your second best choice for your own gaming needs.

However, you simply cannot beat the Wii for kids gaming. I suspect more advanced titles will always be a bit lacking for this system, but they do exist.

PS3 is overpriced and offers you almost nothing the 360 doesn't except Blu-Ray. And, it has a serious lack of new RPG titles, though backwards compatibility will leave you with a truly enormous library of games, a number of which are true RPG classics.

One last thing to consider. Kids are hard on video game systems. The more expensive the system, the more this matters. The Will not only has the most kid-friendly library of games, it's the cheapest of the current systems. My recomendation? Get the Wii, enjoy the few RPG's available for it when your kids aren't using it and use the money you saved not buying a PS3 or 360 to get a GameCube or PS2 for some older RPG action.

Well if you like RPGs of that variety then a PC is your best choice but aside from that the PS3 is going to be the better choice.

For one, depending on which model you purchase you may still be able to play your old PS1 games on the PS3 thus allowing you to get rid of your old system entirely.

For two, the 360 doesn't have games any "better" than any other system, it's all a matter of taste and opinion. Personally I find that the 360 is falling victim to the same problem that the X-Box had and that is that the game library lacks diversity, especially in terms of RPGs.

For three, while the core PS3 price may be higher, given that you are interested in HD players it's actually a better deal than the 360 given that the Blu Ray player is integrated in all PS3s whereas with a 360 it is an expensive add-on to get the HD-DVD player. I've also read that Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVDs 3:1 so it's hard to say if they'll even have any longevity.

Keep in mind the Wii and 360 have been out longer than the PS3 which is largely a factor in the current game selection. In terms of RPGs I have every bit of faith in Sony once again completely dominating that game genre.

Here I'll break it down for you ;-)

Xbox 360- Has probobly the best fps games, and also the best graphics.. but a bit on the expensive side

Wii- Great price, a whole new type of gaming, addictive, great for children, but there aren't many great RPG games like you enjoy for this console

PS3- pretty expensive for what your getting, yes the blu ray is nice, but the games are pretty expensive, and a major downside is that you can't play ps2 games on it =(

PS2- An absolute awesome price, also a DVD player, cheap as can be games, but also lacks the graphics of some of the newer/better systems. but definately the best system for your money

Nintendo DS- A great system for the younger ones, but if your past the age of 13 I wouldn't suggest buying it

PSP- A great system for all ages. The games are also pretty cheap. Plus you can watch movies ;-)

G-Cube- Well its dirt cheap ( like 30 bucks ) and it's great for the kids.the games are also dirt cheap.. lol so now you can get a 360 and give the kids a Gcube =P..

Well all n' all, if your looking for a system for yourself i say ps2, or 360, but if it's for the kids. I'd say the wii all the way

i have the 360,ps3, and the wii and in my opinion, the wii is the best system for family entertainment.Since you have an 8 and 5 year old, you're better off with it. The ps3, now, is the best deal because for 400 bucks, you get bluray and ps3 has games that young kids can play. whereas the 360 most of the games are rated M and T. Plus the you have to add the HDDVD player which is 170 bucks. So I would go with the wii, its cheaper and it is more fun.

I enjoy my XBOX 360 because it has the best games and the online multiplayer is great. I play shooters and not much RPG so I don't know how well the RPGs are on the 360. My 6 year old plays the 360 and he enjoys it. I don't let him play a few games because of the language or the game is too scary.
