Depends what you are after. If you want nice quiet, suburban family orientated lifestyle I suppose it is ok. Not really one of our nicest suburbs. A tad far from the city cbd . . . but there is a cemetary there . . .

I've lived in the next suburb to Marsfield for the last 11 yrs and I love it. It is close to Macquarie shopping centre which others have talked about. It is also know as 'the silicon valley' of Ausralia due to a large number of tech firms being in the business parks surrounding macquarie shopping centre in marsfield. In the business parks there are also a lot of telco's, Optus having just relocated there in the last 6 months and bringing 7,000 people/jobs to the area. There are also a number of multi national pharma companies (I work for one of them) in the area. My son goes to the 'so called' prestiges Epping Boys High School, and is doing very nicely. There are a number of local public primary school also in the area. There is a lot of high density housing around the university and the business park, but outside that perimeter there is lovely family homes. Crime is not a big problem, there doesn't seem to be gangs roaming the streets late at night or anything like that. A few fights break out at the El Rancho hotel now and then but nothing major. So yes I love living here and think it is close enough to the cbd if I need to go there either by bus or train and far enough away that it doesn't get too busy here.
hope that helps.

It is quite a nice area, but it depends what your intentions are, to raise a family/budget etc.
The housing prices aren't bad, and there are some nice houses in the area, most of which have been built from the 1960's to 1990's.
It's also a nice quiet setting, I've never heard of any crime (obviously there would have to be some) or any other disturbances.
Quite a conservative area too, meaning the people around will be in the middle to upper-middle class, financially.
Macquarie Shopping Centre is in Marsfield, quite a large place, where you'd be able to find just about anything you'd want.
As for schools, I only really know of Epping Boys high school, quite a prestigious school as far as marks go, Macquarie University is also in Marsfield.
And I think it isn't that far from the CBD really, my father commutes there every day, takes him about 45 minutes. But depending on your preference, that could be way too much.
Hope this helps
edit - For public transport, there are a lot of buses going towards the city, but not really heading out in the other direction. As others have said below, the new train station is opening up in Marsfield in 2008, which is right near Macquarie Uni & Macquarie Shopping Centre. As well as this station, another is opening called Macquarie Park, this might be closer to you depending on what area of Marsfield you live in, as it's closer to/almost in North Ryde. Epping station (on the same line as the future Marsfield station) isn't really that far away either, you could get a bus to it from Marsfield or just walk.

Well they did have a student go nuts a few years ago and kill a service station attendant in Marsfield - but they did catch him.
So now he is gone I would say it is safe - no place is perfect - it has a high proportion of Asians living there due to the uni etc.

It's fine, Macquarie University is in Marsfield. The new railway line will make it more accessible and cut the travel time to the city which is now either a long bus trip or a bus and then a train.
