This past spring my husband and I bought a GE Profile Harmony Top-Load washer. I used to think I did a really good job with my laundry -- NOW I KNOW I do a much better job with our laundry!! I don't know if it is because I now use "better" detergent (used to use the cheapest stuff I could find, now I have to use high efficiency detergent) or if it is because of the truly better design of the washer. It holds a phenominal amount of laundry (not really a problem for just 2, but my family is down to only 3 people). Traditional washers fill with water and detergent then slosh it around, spin it out & do the same to rinse with softener. This washer puts in some water & detergent, gently sloshes it around (not much) then spins it out and does that over again a several times, again with detergent so you are always pressing (spinning) the dirty water out and starting again with clean water. At the end of the wash cycle you don't have clothes in the same dirty water that started the wash cycle. But it is energy efficient and uses less water in total. It is an awesome machine! Be warned -- we spent about $1,000 on this machine. If you have to buy a dryer too (we didn't), the GE Profile Harmony dryer will connect to your washer with a computer cable so that when you program your wahser, your dryer will know what is in the load and will dry accordingly - not too hot, won't run too long, etc. The first few times I ran this new washer, it freaked me out -- I thought it would just beat up our clothes because it uses so little water. Not to worry, our clothes really are cleaner!

Most machines are going to do the same thing for you. The extras are seldom worth the effort, or expense. A "Roper" brand washer is going to be as good a buy as anything else that you could buy. "Roper" is made by Whirlpool, and that is the honest truth. Which do you want to pay for, name of a brand and the same ability as a "no name", or spend less and have just as good a washer as one that you spent a lot more money on? The "Roper" brand will meet your needs very nicely, and will cost a lot less.

With just 2 of you I'd really consider buying a used washer - great value for your $ and I've had one last for years - that I paid $75 for.
