It's fine to drive barefoot. In spite of persistent myths, there are NO laws against driving barefoot. Unfortunately, this myth is so common that even some cops believe it... but everyone who believes this please see source and stop spreading this falsity.

Some cops are convinced it's unsafe and even though they know it's not illegal may try to write you up for unsafe or reckless driving, however please see the second and third link in the source, for two sites (one from the Michigan PD, one from an Australian newspaper) making it clear that driving barefoot is no more unsafe than many types of footwear that are regularly worn and could even be considered safer than many kinds of shoes.

About having to get out of the car in case of an accident; if you're habitually barefoot you won't have to worry about that, I walk and run barefoot in places with litter and broken glass often enough and I've never cut myself in all the years I've gone barefoot (I haven't worn footwear for almost eleven years). Also, loose footwear will likely come off (not just flipflops, even slip-on closed-toe shoes can easily be lost) but you never hear people use that argument when someone is wearing loafers.

take of my shoes? I took off all my cloths last time I was coming from work at night. lucky for me I did get pull over the cops and I was about to get out of the car when I got home by my garage drive through so I open the door and put my feet down on the ground and I realize i don't have my shoe one and I don't have my cloths too so I just open the garage and pull the car inside. wow. what was I thinking.

I don't take my shoes off but when I am wearing heels I change to sneakers for driving. I know its a little weird.

Why on earth would I do that? So if I have to run out of the car quick I can have bare feet? That's crazy! I've done it as a passenger, but not as a driver. Too weird.

Short distances I don't, but on trips then I definately take my shoes off. I hate shoes, I don't have any on now.
