Having spent some time in Europe, I have learned to dismiss that opinion. Most Europeans have no clue how the US works or how our government is operated. Many seem to think George Bush is loved by all Americans and is the main power in our government (not understanding the purpose of congress or the supreme court, but I guess a lot of Americans are confused in this department too). They also think we are all uneducated gun-toting cow boys, which we all know is not the case.
I can not fault them for this, because this is the impression they get from both the American and European medias. Many only know Americans by what they see on their biased new reports and what they see in American movies and TV shows. What would you think of us if your only interaction with Americans was watching Jerry Springer?
America is just so much different than Europe that you can't compare the two on may aspects. What might work in Europe, won't work here. We live in a suburban society that Europeans can not grasp because it is much different from what they are accustom to.
The fact of the matter is the American culture DOMINATES European culture. Walk down the street in any European city and you'll see Mcdonalds, Starbucks, KFC, etc on every street corner. There are American clothing stores, or stores that sell American designer clothes everywhere. Seeing someone wearing American clothes is a common hood. Or how about going and asking a European what their favorite movie is. I'll bet you it's an American movie.
English is common throughout Europe; there is practically no need to speak any other language. Even a gas station attendant I met in Germany spoke perfect English. I bet they all aren't going out of their ways to learn English for the sake of the British.
Even the EU is a clear example of Europe mimicking America. If you look at it, you'll notice how similar the EU is to our federal government, and how it is striving to be even more like it by reducing the European countries to nothing more than states that lack any form of national sovereignty. Some even suggested calling the EU the 'United States of Europe'.
And I don't care what way you want to spin it, the US is still the leader in developing new technology. The integrated circuit, probably the single most important technological advancement of the last century, is perpetually developed and advanced by Americans in American companies. The PC is dominated by American components. There is no doubt in my mind the US leads the world in scientists and intellectuals.

It might bit a bit of both but like it or not the US is more of a superpower than any European nation or all put together and has been for 50+ years. And why? Europe has itself to blame for wasting itself in two world wars which allowed the US and the USSR come to power. Western Europe only existed as such because of US presence. When the USSR fell, it left the US which has been an unrivalled superpower militarily and economically
As to dummies, despite the recent presidential elections for our present incompetent president much of your scientific research is conducted in the US. Though Europeans hate to admit it US culture dominates the world in movies, music, and books

Because we have been more fortunate than them. If Hitler took over Mexico (as France) and Bombed the crap out of New York City (as London) then Americans would be far more likely to remember the past then forget it.
Our isolationalist attitude pre-WWII allowed millions to die from Russia, England, and the rest of Europe. (not to mention the Holocaust). We stayed out of the fight until Germany was so over stretched. We let them kill each other to save American lives. Eventually we stepped in with an overwhelming military and trounced the Nazi's in France, Africa, Poland and finally Germany. It was well known he lost once we declared war. When we approached Normandy ALL of Hitlers Nazi's knew they were going to lose.
The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and we said the time is now. All the steel that was used to build the Japanese aircraft carriers, planes and guns came from America. As a matter of fact the old "L" train in Manhattan was dismembered and sold to Japan at high prices.During Hitlers reign 3 enormous Japanese ships were almost constantly docked in New York City being loaded with steel to build their navy to such strength.
We don't remember because we have less scars to remind us of the past. We go to work and purchase goods. We are more concerned with Britany and Paris Hilton than Banazair Bhutto.
Then the only reason we realize it is big news that she gets Assassinated is because it's front and center for 24 hrs straight on TV. 24 hours before she was Assassinated I'll bet 1 in 50 Americans knew who she was.
We are a super a super power because of our Economy enables us to build our military. Without a strong economy there can't be a military like ours. Our economy is what makes us so powerful. We as dumbed down Americans place high value on spending therefore creating taxable income, sales tax, and property taxes which has created the largest economy in the world thus the most powerful military.
The sleeping giant that was awoken in world war II has fallen back into a slumber and the Europeans scars remind them of the past.

You are incorrect. Europeans may think that America is full of idiots, but they don't think that we're not a superpower.
Are you going to argue that the US does not have a leading position in the international system and the ability to influence events and project power on a worldwide scale? We do. You don't have to like it, and you don't have to like America, but those are the facts of the matter.
Terrorists, who hate America far more than Europeans do and want to destroy the entire country, even they recognize that the US is a superpower.

We have arrogant and greedy people in powerful positions. A lot of Americans are pretty dumb. Part of the problem is the whole thing with frivolous lawsuits and people wanting to play the blame game. It does seem to get out of hand. The U.S. ranks really low on math and science. We are the supposed innovators. Not anymore and not for a long time. It shows where our priorities are or aren't. We are all about entertainment. :-(

The US is a superpower and stretches it's influence worldwide which is against what the Founders had in mind when the republic was formed, we have became less of a federal republic and more and more like an empire. The Europeans who have always loved the notion of empire can see this more clearly than most Americans and a certain section of the European population is jealous of the fact.
