Hot water will shrink denim fabric the first time it is washed in hot water. Even the dryer will shrink denim. You would think after 150 years some one would make a jean out of preshrunk material.

Does Hot Water Shrink Jeans

I've never known jeans to "expand". If they are 100% cotton and not preshrunk, they will "shrink" to a certain extent when washed. Hot water will fade them faster than cold, but both will shrink them, in my experience.

Hot water and dry completely if you want to shrink.

Cold water and hang dry if you don't

Some jeans still won't shrink. It is according to the material.

Hot will shrink, if they are cotton, and cold might shrink them slightly if they are new. Don't dry them in a dryer, that will really shrink them. Let hang to air dry to get the longest life out of your jeans.

If you want them to shrink - wash in hot water and dry them on high heat.

If you dont want them to shrink, wash in cold and air dry. This is what I do with all my clothing - I only wash underware, socks, and towels in hot and those are the only things I put into the dryer.

Also, washing in cold water and air drying will save you money on your energy bill.

ANY clothing made of 100% COTTON (of which most jeans ARE) WILL shrink AND fade if washed in hot water. AND they will continue to shrink every time you wash them this way.
