The thing is i'm described as a "gifted" child at school. I'm doing my maths gcse a year early and got A*s in my mock. I know that if i PROPERLY applied myself i could get outstanding results (all A*s) but then again i think to myself- why not get GOOD results (As and Bs) but actually go out with friends more instead of focusing totally on work. My mum obviously thinks i have to focus on education and is forcing me to study very hard but im starting to want to go out and actually have fun- who's right and who's wrong? Some days i DO see her point but some days i want to go out and be a normal teen. Do i REALLY have to get these amazing results? I'm 15, in year 10.

If you are applying yourself and working hard, YOU DESERVE some free time to let go and relax. Everyone deserves that....all work and no play makes us dull boys and girls.

its called growing up- deciding who you are and what you want. If you decide you want education thats fine, but if you are not happy or want something else or something more, then you really need to do as your feelings tell you.
Your intelligent about facts and figures, but are you intelligent about life and about your psychological and mental well being? these are really important parts to your persona, and if you choose to ignore them, they dont go away, they register in your subconcious, you cannot live your life as a robot, soemthing inside of you wont let that happen. What can happen is as a result, you get a mental health problem- true, all the psychobabble in the world will not bring back your lost years when you chose study over experience. Its your call.

If your heading for a doctor or law type of career, then yes you do need amazing results, but you have to have this in your nature, you have to really want this, not just think it would be a good idea, if you have it a strong motivator, you wont find it too hard to say no to parties and shopping and focus on homework, but if you find it a stuggle now, it will only get worse as the paths between you and social types differ more and more.

Dont forget, after GCSEs there are Alevels, University entrance exams, Uni itself (and for how many years) then entry level work for years before you land yourself in a job where freetime and money may be there for you, but you may be too old and too tierd to really utilise and enjoy it.

Lifes for living, you choose how you want to live it, not your mum.

You have the whole of you're life to have fun, i know it seems a long time till you finish school but trust me the time will fly by. Get the best grades you can and be proud of you're achievements, at least then you will have the opportunity to do well in you're work life. It will all fall into place in the end, why settle for lemonade when you can have champagne. Good luck x x

i am 33, nearly 34, and i am completing my final year at uni. i also have a 14 year old son, who i adore.
when i was at school, i had fun but i never got my exams.
if i could go back i would work harder at school.
getting great grades will enable you to go to a great college and uni. then when you have done your education you can have as much fun as you like!
thats what i tell my son, your mum is right.
just go out 1 or 2 times a week, but do not let your grades slip.
good luck.x

hey, theres no reason why you cant do both. schoolwork shouldnt take up all of your free time, so just make sure you do it and then you can go out during the rest of the time.

if you can get all A*s then you might be able to get into oxford or cambridge. but to get in to them you need to have a range of hobbies as well as super grades. so how can you get involved in hobbies if youre studying all the time?

do you see what im getting at? what i mean is, you SHOULD go out, otherwise youll just be a study robot, and study robots dont get into oxford or cambridge

If you are as smart as you think you are then you should be able to answer your question yourself.
