It's not just nowadays. They always have been.
You had Tom and Jerry trying to slaughter each other, that bloke (can't remember his name) Always trying to kill Bugs Bunny etc.
They are no worse now than they were before. I do agree it sends out the wrong message though. :0)

Which cartoons are you thinking about?
Popeye (1930's) taught the kiddies to handle conflict by beating the tar out of somebody.
Betty Boop (1930's) was a 16 year-old sexpot.
Tom and Jerry (1940-1958) Taught kids that dumb, brute force usually loses to smart brute force.
Looney Tunes (1930-1969) Solve all your problems with "Acme" brand TNT. Not to mention the racist "toons" that you can't even buy anymore... (when's the last you saw "Speedy Gonzales")
Cartoons like "The Simpsons" and "King of the Hill" are funny without any serious violent plot lines--so there's plenty to refute your argument.
If its Japanese animation that bothers you, I'd say it works about the same as the domestic stuff. For every "Naruto" or a "Dragonball Z" there's a "Kiki's Delivery Service" or "Speed Racer".
I don't see anything particularly alarming in the current crop of funnies.

which cartoons do you mean??There is a lot of Manga which is violent I think and some that arn't. Studio Ghibli produce beautiful animations that clearly represent good v evil but depict reasons why i.e environmental issues,{ Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away. Kikis delivery service. Pom Poco. My Neighbour Totoro } older Disney always has sexualised undertones [which I find extremely distasteful] I never liked my children to watch Tom and Jerry tweety pie, etc as they were absolutely all about hurting each other, , it seems that computerised animation is now the way cartoons are going ie Shrek, Polar express, etc but they are not violent are they. I think animations are classier than before, but I can't speak for the stuff they put on TV for kids as that seems to be mostly rubbish, is this what you are referring to?

I am 70 years old, and while the cartoons when I was a kid were not as graphic as they are today, they were still violent. When a steam roller would run over a cartoon character, and he would be as flat as a piece of paper, we would all laugh. Bottom line is that we knew it wasn't real. We knew that if we ran over a real person with a steam roller, he would be dead. There were probably some mentally-disturbed kids who didn't get it then, and there probably are today.

Yep, spot on.
Many parents do not understand the power of television.
Of all the things we do for our children to protect them the TV is the one thing that is accepted and used by all members of a household without considering the aspect of violence on TV in its many forms.
You will note that all this influence comes from the USA...

My kids have watched a lot worse on their computer games and haven't expressed an interest in even owning a Red Rider B-B gun.
If you raise your kids right, they won't take anything they see anywhere on TV or the computer seriously.
