that's a very general question. But I would say good grammar and fine format, but amateur in style, tone, etc. Not interesting. Just getting by. But then it could be the other way around with bad grammar but interesting topic.

It depends on the essay topic and the other characters' traits. Mediocrity is a relative term.
A mediocre character is not necessarily uninteresting. That could only be determined by comparison to the other characters.
Generally a mediocre character's demeanor may be blue, unmotivated, lackadaisical. Attitude towards others may be censurable, ungracious, rude, shameless, resentful etc.
