Why can you not use rechargable batteries to power a xbox 360 controller.?

Who told you that? Somebod trying to sell you the Microsoft play and charge kit?

I've been doing it since I bought my 360 over 6 months ago and had no problems.

Yes you can use re-chargeable batteries.
