Too easy.
I was told by an very wise Matron in a hospital. Never give your heart to a patient or a sick child they will only break it.
ie:- be detached and professional but still caring.

Not if you have before and only been taken advantage of or disappointed. The true question is, is it worth it?
I can answer that with a famous quotation in mind:
It's better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.
Good luck, and keep your heart always open... yet guard it fiercely, you only have one.
