Because you have the 32bit system and not the 64bit system, which would show all 4gigs.

32-bit Windows XP Pro does NOT have a 2GB limit on RAM... where are you people getting your information? It can support up to 4GB. It's gotta be a chipset issue... maybe bad connections on the RAM chips. Pull and reseat all the RAM and try again. As one poster asked, does it all show in your BIOS when you start your computer? See the site below for info PAE and some options if your BIOS is in fact seeing all 4GB.

If you are have a 32 -bit system, I think it can only handle a couple of gigs. You'd need a 64=bit OS to address 4 GB

32 bit XP only sees up to 3 GB, more often than not it can only handle 2.5.

It maybe a few prblm of compatibility of your ram....
Are all ram of the same brand and speed?

You have "hit the wall" in 32bit XP.
