Raised around em... My Dads a computer software engineer.... Now I work for the Gov fixing em.
Edit:
Lol reading some of this stuff makes me chuckle, I guarantee people that say "they know everything" are lying they may not even know how bad their lying.
Please know it alls, tell me about ATM switch's, multiplexers, KIV switch's, large domains with over 9000 users, active directory, SMS, CAC certificates Blackberries, Fiber optics, C, C++, COBOL, Basic, Hex Dec, Exchange, Routers, blades, servers, DNS, DHCP, VPN, RAS, and etc etc
It would take a few life times to know EVERYTHING. It's a foolish statement, take pride, but be modest "nobody likes a know it all."
As far as learning the best way is to drop a few hundred and build a computer from scratch, you'll run into so many problems as a beginner you best friend will become google... then you'll just start to figure it out. Do some research on what you need. Go to www.newegg.com and buy the parts and put it together... Start with buying a cheap mainboard from there find out exactly the parts it needs to get it running... I can build one for as cheap as 200 bucks without a monitor.
Mainboard
CPU
Ram
Hard Drive
Video Card
Monitor

I know everything there is to know about computers.
They don't call me King Geek for nothing ya know?
How did I get that distinguished title?
I'm glad you asked.
You see, I'm from the old school of computing. When I began I was using DOS version 3.3, and I have progressed? up to the present Windows Vista OS (Operating System).
Windows is nice but I'm glad that I am still able to use DOS because it gives me "RAW" control that you just don't get with Windows.
You can become knowledgeable with computers by reading books and/or magazines that interest you, take a course in some pertinent material of your liking.
A sure-fire way of becoming "smart" is to take a programming course, you will, without doubt, become a geek, (or so others will think), and it is not all that difficult.
For instance, try learning HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), the language used to make Web sites (pages).
It's a lot of fun because as you are learning it, you are able to see immediate results of the code you've written and correct errors as you go.
;-)

I don't feel like I know a lot about computers, but I do know this: the "Help" menu can be a real "saving grace" - it let me know what computers where really all about, and how software worked. Still, I only know enough to use them - I'm no expert.

Stop asking other people questions and try to solve problems yourself. If you had a translator it would take you a long time to learn a language but if I dropped you in a country you would learn the language fast.
