Practice meditation by using a "temperature trainer" instrument. You can use a simple thermometer between your thumb and forefinger; relax, visualize your blood stream flowing down the back of your head and into your feet and hands. A friend can read relaxing statements to you if that helps. "You feel relaxed and your arms and body feel heavy and warm." etc. As you can focus, your temperature in your hands does elevate. It's an issue of reducing the blood flow from your brain down into your limbs. I also had the opportunity to work in Menninger's Bio-feedback lab, in Topeka, KS, where they have a huge audio-feedback machine that measures brain waves. Electrodes are "glued"/stuck on the scalp. As the person relaxes, it also slows the brain wave frequency. (Google if you're interested in this.) Beta for regular thinking; Alpha, for more relaxed and for day dreaming; Theta, for dreaming; and deep, deep yoga-like trance, Delta. I was able to be in deeper Alpha, when I was startled by the lower "beep" when I dipped down into Theta. I stopped then. "Being" was all there was! Very very relaxing as the heart beat slows and you feel very rested after only a short time in those states. I used to meditate every day and I know I was better off with it. But, I get lazy and just go to sleep....

You cannot yet empty your mind from thoughts, it might even require tiresome and long-lasting assiduous exercising in the yoga-style, but you might try and push aside those burdensome thoughts and regrettable obligations or obsessive wishes of yours thru the help of some glowing day-dreaming, of dazzling visions and wild reveries.

You might try and be with others, and then feastly enjoy some good food, that food that you often wished to be able to enjoy. You might try and enjoy some good mildly intoxicating drink, that drink that you often wished to have the occasion to enjoy.

You might then fall peacefully asleep, even in the embrace of a lover, and so have more or less movimentated dreams and nightmares instead of those conscious more or less burdening thoughts that you will want to get rid of.

You might try and empty your mind from burdening thoughts by relaxedly embracing with and talking to a lover, to a friend.

You might try and empty your mind from unwanted thoughts by carefully following some engaging instructions or diagrams about something concrete in your work life or in your hobby or pastime.

You might try and empty your mind from those thoughts that you do not want by going or riding out for fresh air, alone or with somebody else, out into the landscape, to the countryside, to the seaside, or lakeside, or walking upwards to green sun-kissed flowery hills, or out into some wide desert place singing and talking to your soul, or even to a high glowing mountain four hours ahead of you. You might look at the horizon, and so think of all glowing dazzling horizons that there are imaginable and unimaginable for you.

Some indulgence in glowing visions and dazzling reveries might help you, might make you smile, might make you laugh.

You cannot empty your mind from thoughts when you have to seriously think about how to do it. Your mind has a fiercy life of her own, and your thoughts have all possible more or less wild more or less persisting lives of their own.

Don't worry, be happy!

You can think of a blank piece of paper as pennee suggested, that works,or a continous move, like hundreds of sheep jumping over a little bridge, one by one just like you saw in cartoons,or start counting butterflyes.
Visualise a butterfly passing before your eyes and say "one butterfly",then visualise the butterfly again, without changing anything in his position or direction.
By the time you get to 50 Butterflyes there will be nothing left in your head.
