What happens if you accidently downloaded something illegal with out knowing what it was?
Do the police still come kicking down the door or do they look for a certain amount of times the file is downloaded?

1) It's generally not the police who come knocking, it's a subpoena from the RIAA.
2) to date, I know of no instances where a single questionable download has prompted any unsolicited visits of this type. The RIAA goes after volume downloaders - the ones who download thousands of illegal files, as well as uploading files illegally.

You can download all you want. The RIAA are only going after the people uploading content. Even then, the cases are being thrown out because the people that investigates for the RIAA isn't even a licensed investigation firm so the cases are being dropped.

Doubt they will kick down the door!!! But ignorance of the law will not save you from getting in trouble if they did press charges. You cant say sorry I accidentally ran him over either!!

A lot will depend on what it is and the laws in your area if it is a low priority item nothing . But child porn or copyright infringement things like that you might want to worry . Also it may be a crime to not report it .

One song or film would not lead to trouble. Those got trouble because they illegally downloaded more than a thousand.

If you did not ditribute that accidental file in any form and delete it immediately, you would be OK.

Some places you are legally obligated to report such material to the law.

Mostly, its just a good idea to ban the server from your network, purge the offending material, and try to avoid it in the future.
