A circle has no beginning once it is drawn.
Somebody or something drew it, but at this point it's irrelevant.

the egg.
As species change over time, in the process of evolution, the first modern chicken was the offspring of the last direct ancestor of domestic chickens to not share that classification (likely the Red Junglefowl).
Therefore, a non-chicken did, in fact, lay the first egg.

Neither chicken nor egg.
From evolution, the origin of every living things was some simple cells from outer space, then they got evolved as they entered into the Earth. Eventually, those simple cells evolved to be a chicken. Then, for making new generation safely, chickens hide their next generation into eggs.
Perhaps, God called those simple cells as Adam and Eva.

this is completely depends on what you mean on 'chicken'
if chicken is what we know and love(the laying egg type) then the answer is :egg, because to animal with similar characteristics to that of a chicken but not a chicken mate and produce chickens.
but if your use of the word 'chicken' as a metaphore to any animal/plant then the answer is:chicken, because animals/plants(single celled mind u at first) developed about 4 billion years ago when the earth was young and violent.
