They'd probably need a few days to do a credit check and decide whether to rent to you. But once that's complete, if the apartment is vacant you could most likely move in right away.

At the property managing company I used to work for, that was extremely rare. The property manager would have to do the pre-move in walk through to fill in the inspection forms, we'd want to have the unit cleaned since it may have been vacant for a while and gotten dusty. If repairs were still being done, the tenant might have to wait for that to be completed. There was a credit check and reference verification to do, which could take 1/2 an hour to a few days depending on when the references returned our calls.

The times when we did have someone move in on the same day of the showing, the tenants were nightmares. It's not to say that you would be, but the folks who pushed to get the unit right away were very high-maintenance and obnoxious. Because they rushed to get the unit, repairs weren't finished and the new tenants wouldn't cooperate with the repair people or not allow the property manager to oversee the repair in the tenants' absence.

Very rarely does that happen, though it is possible.

As already mentioned, several issues can hold up a move in - credit/reference/background checks, waiting for non-certifed funds to clear, utility serve transfers, the condition of the apartment, etc.

it also depends on if the apartment is clean. They have to do a pre-move walk through with you to note any damage prior to move in so you don't get charged when you move out.

sometimes youll see ads that say something like "move in tommorow" or something similiar. In most cases you will have to wait a little while.
