I don't think there is a 'best' answer! B & W movies go back to the 'pre-sound' movies, and continue for a GOOD 30 or 40 years! What defines 'BEST', as far as black and white? Historical significance (at least TWO questions there... (1) HISTORICAL significance as regards the 'chronological' TIME when the movies where MADE...(2) HISTORICAL significance regarding the 'period of time' that the movie references!
Hard to give examples, here, in some ways...
Charlie Chaplin... one of the 'first'! Is the 'FIRST' worth watching? Or, MUCH later (chronologically - when the films were MADE) - the Little Rascals? BOTH are about 'TOUGH-TIMES!!!
Black and White!
BEST --- ???
Depends on what your (TASTE) is... and that might not agree with what "I" think is worth watching...
Are you looking for the 'BEST' 'ENTERTAINMENT'??? I have serious doubts that very many, looking for 'ENTERTAINMENT' would choose "CHARLIE CHAPLIN" over "STAR WARS", or "LORD of the RINGS", etc., if they are looking for a 'thrill' !!!
MY recommendations??? (TOO many to pick one or two)...
* Almost anything CHARLIE CHAPLIN!
* John Wayne - STAGE COACH
* 'Documentaries' that show 'actual footage' ...
* "GONE WITH THE WIND" (challenge me on my interpretation if you so choose)
* Henry Fonda - (the one about the Christmas story)
* 'The Lone Ranger', 'Roy Rogers', 'Gene Autrey'
* 'Gun Smoke' wasn't a 'movie'... (sorry)
Films that had VALUE... The 'GOOD' guy (was Brett a 'good guy?') either came out on top, or made a 'statement' that had a POSITIVE influence!
How about the Zapruder (sp?) film of the Kennedy assination?
The 'BEST' B&W movies are the ones that MEAN something to the person watching them!
That's MY opinion!!!

I agree, Casablanca.
Mostly what I have for black/white pictures is comedy. Above all, the "I Love Lucy" television episodes are priceless. Umm...
"Abbot and Costello" are a riot! You can actually watch them on Youtube. "The Little Rascals" is a pretty funny series. The Andy Griffith show is great. Roman Holiday, with Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard, is an old-fashioned romance. If I can think of more I'll add them.
