Is there a certain type claim check that must be handed to the customer in exchange for his personal property? Must the merchant post a notice of liability and/or responsibility?

RICHARD IS 100% CORRECT.

Its like asking your guest to take off their shoes. THERE IS NO LAW, ITS PRIVATE PROPERTY.

Are you talking about when they make you leave your bags at the entrance, or when they check your bags at the exit?

In the former case, there is no certain type of claim check, they can have whatever system they want. There is also no requirement to post a notice of liability, but it would be extremely stupid for them to not do so.

No and no.

The customer has the right to simply refuse to hand over his bag, and leave.

Now, if he DOES hand over his bag, and the store loses it, he can sue the store UNLESS they have a sign up that limits their liability.

Technically the store can't do that as it's a invasion of privacy and they don't have a warant. Ok example at Fry's Electronics i went the the exit and they signaled to check but i said "***** back off i bought this so it's mine!!" and they didn't do anything because there rent-a-cop can't do ****.
