I was born and raised in the LBC. If your tourney is at a HS you are fine. If it is at Milikan, Wilson or Lakewood HS then they are in very good areas. Jordan and Poly are in the Hood. But you are still fine because of the safty of the school yards.

I find it hard to believe that your touney wouldnt be at one of the wonderful parks in LB though. All the parks that have soccer fields are great.

Basically, you have nothing to worry about.

Ok, number one, Long Beach, as all other cities, has its good parts and its bad. The majority of people in the city are either some race from Latin America, black, or Cambodian (Asian). There is a wonderful part of town that was recently inaugurated called little Cambodia town, if you have time, check it out.

As for gangs, i'm afraid gang members reside all over Los Angeles. Just keep away from them and nothing will happen. Even then so, not all gang members will hurt you, they are human beings and many i've met are actually very sweet. Not all "gangs" kill individuals, except the MS13 which is a gang that originated with low lifes from El Salvador.

Since you'll be busy at your soccer tournament i doubt you will even run into any problems, Long Beach is a very nice city.

I suggest you research where Long Beach is in California. It's, well hence the name, on the beach and is close to Huntington Beach and Compton is north. But I highly doubt the park you will be playing at is near the violent parts of Compton- the people putting on the tournament won't have you playing games at a park where everyone has to wear bullet proof vests'. Your coach probably laughed at you cuz the fields are probably in a nice neighborhood.

Long Beach calls itself the most diverse city in the nation. We have people that live in the ghetto and people that live in multi-million dollar homes on the beach.
Long Beach is not Beirut in the 1980's. I've never heard gun fire and I don't dodge bullets on the way to my car.
You are probably playing at one of the colleges in LB and they are safe. If you want to see pictures of the Long Beach than look at the Wikipedia web page.
From playing in soccer tournaments myself I'm sure there is an address or location listed on the info you got. You obviously have the Internet so look the place up.

Ok, I want to be the first to answer your question. I think you should not be any more afraid in long beach than where you are, because the truth of the matter is that it can be dangerous anywhere. Just because it is the "ghetto" so you say, I think you should really look beyond that and be a little bit smarter and less stereotypical.

dont be scared
you are a building all of this up out of an assumption about a group of people so quit while you are ahead.. you dont know who you are up against.. look up the other school online but dont prejudge - be cool. and relax you could make a friend. and think about what alterior motive other people might have to urge you to believe that a specific people are violent??..
why would one group of people want you to think this way about a "different" group??>
and how could it benefit them?

someone does have a prejudice even if it isnt u.

and so you think that these "ghetto girls" feel comfortable meeting people for the 1st time whom they know think they are inferior- not for their sportmanship or lack of talent-- but just because of there perceived economic class and the assumption that they are violent..

liberate yourself
bc if people are encouraging these biases in you those are passive interjections of a prejudice nature and you are old ebough to make the conscious choice not to buy into that.. but to accept that there are good and bad and friendly and not friendly people everywhere

and the good and friendly people are not the ones who want to to worry about bad people who arent even there

I certainly wouldn't worry another minute. Your event will be safe and secured. Long Beach is a college town and some parts look shabby but I wouldn't be afraid to go to any part of it, especially in the daytime. Relax and I wish you the best in your tournament!
