As someone who owns every Floyd album ever made I can honestly say that narrowing their work down to select "good' songs is an impossible task. Each album Floyd made was usually based around some sort of unifying concept of the time it was made, and Floyd themselves consciously avoided trying to produce a hit single after 1968. Thus Floyd has always been best consumed as an album based band. Each album is unique and quite different from all the others; Floyd started in 1967 as an underground psychedelic art rock band whose repetoire was mostly based around improvisation and arty innovation; throughout the late 60s and early 70s they did plenty of film scores and experimented with symphonic music as well; in the mid 70s they branched out into prog rock and conceptual theatric pieces such as The Wall and beyond that they became more conventional and somewhat restrained in latter years. To put it simply, 60s Pink Floyd sounds very little like 70s Pink Floyd which sounds very little like 80s Pink Floyd...etc. I love it all as it was fun watching them develop and experiment with countless genres throughout the years; as far as 'good" Floyd songs I suppose it depends how open minded one is to the variety of styles they have experimented with over the years. Overall I think the album "Animals" from 1977 is the one album that encapsulates most of what Floyd was about in a cohesive package.

"Comfortably Numb" and "On the Turning Away" are tied for their greatest, with "Brain Damage / Eclipse running a close second. Come to think of it, the entire "Dark Side of the Moon" album is one of the greatest of all time. If you want to hear some really wild stuff go way back to "Umma Gumma" and listen to "Set Controls for the Heart of the Sun" and "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Toger in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict".

I have seen Pink Floyd 3 times in concert and then I was really impressed with "Echoes" in the early '70's. Then, later, on their "Animals" tour they did the full version of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond", which was a steamroller. The last time I saw them live, "Dogs of War" nearly shook the building down.

Just a few recomendations.

It may help to down about 4 beers and then start with High Hopes, Then move to Learning to Fly, On the Turning Away, if you are still interested, move to Comfortably Numb, Good Bye Blue Sky, Mother and if you still want more, then pop in Dark Side of the Moon .Don't even go to Animals though, not for the casual fan.

You gotta be kidding ! There are lots of great songs !

Try the entire "Dark Side of the Moon" album which was on the charts for years. "Welcome to the Machine", "Free Four", "One of these Days", "Obscured by Clouds", "If", "A Pillow of Winds", etc. The entire Animals, The Division Bell and The Wall albums. Waters' and Gilmour's solo efforts.

"Don't think they are anything special" ? They had an enormous impact on rock & influenced hundreds of bands/musicians.

I'd get a glass of wine/beer, close your eyes, relax, turn up the music & just listen to The Floyd, dude !!!

if you don't like anything you've heard so far then you probably aren't going to be a floyd fan.....Wish is one of the most 'commercial' songs they've put out...the catalog is very eclectic and designed for introspective, intellectual, and thinking musicians......you have to listen to and read into the lyrics and be able to understand the subtext to alot of them beyond just the great musical body they have put together.....not to mention the fact that Gilmore is one of the most innovative and tasty guitar players out there.....

Time
Great Gig in the Sky
Shine on You crazy diamond
Pigs (3 of them)
Another Brick in the Wall, parts 1-3
Comfortably Numb
Sorrow
Dogs of War
On the turning away
Have a cigar
The Thin Ice
Run Like Hell

The list is soooo long and there are soooo many to choose from but if you can't get into any of those then you probably aren't going to be a fan....but there are sooo many of us that are I don't think they'll really care if you don't like them

there are probably too many good pink floyd songs to list, but the one in particular i will mention is another brick in the wall...if you've never heard that song and it doesn't make you want to scream "we don't need no education!" then something is wrong with you
