Providing yu have the receipt and it is in fully working order, it is the law that they have to give your your money back. They will try to palm you off with it's not company policy-THIS IS RUBBISH. They will also offer you credit in the shape of a note or vouchers and if you are ok with that, they don't lose money so it's a win-win. (And quicker and easier.)
However, if they insist on not giving you your money back, then you have to contest it. It takes ages though-even though you are in the right and after about a month, you'll get a cheque from head office.
Jewellers are notorious for this but stand your ground as the law is on your side-bascally, you will get it back providing you are prepared to wait.

You don't say if you're in the UK, but assuming you are, consumer law states the following:
If you want to return something because it's faulty, then the store HAS to either replace it or give you your money back. And it's YOUR choice, not theirs.
If you take something back because you don't like it, or you changed your mind, or you got the wrong size, the store does not legally have to do anything. They have sold a satisfactory product so have no responsibility to do anything more. However, most stores have a customer satisfaction policy and will generally allow a refund, or an exchange, on production of a receipt. They may offer credit vouchers instead. Either way, anything they offer is at their discretion and is not required by law.

The people above who say that you can return anything, and the store must accept it, are wrong. As is the person who gave a thumbs down!

It depends on each shop's policy. Most shops refuse to return money, but offer you to exchange that gift with something else in the shop. If you can't find anything else you like in the shop they might give you a giftcard so that you could come back later to get something else.

In the Uk you can return anything in brand new condition for cash to Marks and Spencers for instance for about a month after Xmas, without a receipt. There are other big stores that will also give you your money back, but not sure which ones.

Depends on the return policy of the retailer from whom the gift was purchased.

Most stores will let you with a reciept but some will just give you a gift card. It really depends on the store.

if it is walmart, they offer a store credit card even if you dont have the receipt, i have done this several times with walmart. but as others wrote, it really depends on the return policy of the store, but most stores bcuz of the holiday season usually offer a better return policy bcuz lets face it "who wants to tell someone how much they spent on them?"......good luck, happy new year!!!!!!

I think it's very tacky of you .Someone thought enough of you to buy you a gift to begin with. Keep it and deal with it for what it's worth.
