I used to be able to take a letter-sized page, rip off the bottom to leave a square, make a boat with that, then rip the bottom strip into two more squares, and make a two-part man with that, that would fit nicely in the boat. I still remember how to make the boat (don't see it anywhere on the web, but it's a cool boat - more of a dinghy than a sailboat), but I can't remember how to make the man. I believe all three start from the same folds. The lower part of the man has two legs, and slots nicely into the top part.

I'd love to recall how to do this.

Sadly, I learned this over two decades ago. Probably from a book, but not one that I ever owned.

I do not recognize the model as you describe it, so I can only send you to sites where they have a wide collection of models:
http://dev.origami.com/diagram.cfm
http://origami.kvi.nl/models/
http://www.origami-club.com/en/

Do you recall where you learned if from?
If is was a book you might still have it somewhere.
I also have books with all models I used to make till I found internet.
