Figure the volume of the aquarium in cubic feet (by multiplying the 3 dimensions). Then multiply this by 7.48 gallons per cubic feet.

For example, let's say the dimensions were 3 feet wide, 1.5 feet deep and 2 feet high.

Multiply these dimensions (3 x 1.5 x 2) = 9 cubic ft.

Now multiply this by 7.48 to get the gallons:
9 x 7.48 = 67.3 gallons

length *width*height=(first product). Then you find out how much space 1 gallon of water takes and divide the first product by how much space the gallon takes up. Then you have your answer.

gallon is a measure of volume.
what you need is to know how many cubic inches a gallon of water takes up. with that conversion factor, you can determine your aquarium capacity.
if you measure length, width, and height in inches, volume
in gallons is: L*W*H/231

in other words, there are about 231 cubic inches in a liquid gallon.
