I would say a combo of classical & metal. Two of the founders were originally in a metal band called "Savatage" until TSO became successful in the 90's.

Not wanting to give up their metal roots, they employed metal guitar riffs & a light show for their performances, giving a unique sound/prespective to ordinarily stuffy classical orchestra music.

It's a big band made up of modern day rock music instruments (electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboard/ synths, and drums) that play classical tunes with a rock-music/metal twist. However, their approach is more geared toward the mainstream, meaning it's not much heavy. But they're VERY GOOD!!! They are mostly famous for their renditions of famous classical Christmas tunes. If ever you see video clips of amazingly lighted houses during Christmas in which the lights flicker in sync with an instrumental Christmas music that sounds like neo-classical rock, then that tune most probably is by Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
