I have had my male beta for about 5 months (in a small1/2 gallon tank) I recently purchased a 10 gallon tank, and want to set it up soon.

Just wondering which fish are good with male betas. And how many would be good a number without my tank being overcrowed.

THANKS

Also do I need to get a heater for these fish?

Bettas make great community fish as long as you pick the right fish to go with them... As long as you avoid fish with long fins (like Gouramis, Angelfish, Fancy Guppies, or Skirted Tetras), fish that are hyper or nippy (Tiger Barbs, Danios, Minnows, Rainbowfish, or certain Tetras), and aggressive fish or fish that will make it a meal (most Cichlids, and large fish), you really shouldn't run into trouble.

Bottom dwellers like Kuhli Loaches, Cories, Otos, and Dwarf Chain Loaches are all good choices as well as midlevel swimmers like Phantom (and many other) Tetras, Rasboras, Cherry/Gold/Golden/Rosy/Checker Barbs, or livebearers) all make great choices for tankmates.

I would suggest 3-4 of ONE of the bottom dwelling species I listed (Kuhli Loaches OR Cories OR Otos OR Dwarf Chain Loaches) and 5-6 peaceful Tetras OR Cherry/Gold/Golden/Rosy/Checker Barbs, OR 2-3 Platties, Mollies, Swordtails, or STANDARD (non-fancy) Guppies.*

Bettas, along with all the fish I listed, are tropical, and unless your house is between 77* and 80* all year round, you will need a heater... You will need a filter regardless of any circumstances. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

*With livebearers (most notably Mollies, Swordtails, Platties, and Guppies), it is best to keep only males unless you plan on breeding them. Females are often pregnant in the pet store and will continue to breed in your tank, leaving you with hundreds of worthless fry... :~(

EDIT: If you keep too few schooling fish in the tank (like Tetras), you will almost certainly see them nipping at the Betta... You should always have as many schooling fish as your tank can support to alleviate nipping and any other stress related issues.

What about 4-6 Dwarf Rasbora in with the Betta

I keep 5 black neon tetras and 3 kuhli loaches in with my betta and they all do great together. These fish all need a heater and your betta will appreciate one too. Most of the small tetras, excluding the ones that can be nippy can be kept with bettas. Platies and mollies would be a couple of other good choices.

Yes you need to get a heater. And a filter and ph tester and all that stuff. I have two neon tetras, two glo fish and a corey in my 5 gallon along with my betta. I heard if you get too many neon tetras in the tank they will pick at the bettas fins but i don't know for sure. Most community fish will do well, and bottom feeders are also great because they clean up!
