I need a sewing machine that's easy to use, i.e. it doesn't need 500 built in stitches... I want to be able to make clothes and it also needs to be durable enough to work on denim. I'm a beginner also, so i want something relatively cheap to start out with. also needs to be a quiet machine. Any recommendations? thanks

I would recommend that you visit the shops that sell sewing machines and try them out. Janome and Bernina are both top lines and both sell a less expensive machine, but that will still run you up to $200 or more. Sears Kenmore are made by Janome, and I saw one a couple years ago when I was looking that looked just like the Janome Gold that was $69. The old Singers are durable (I have one that was made in 1970 and is still going strong), but I wasn't really pleased with the newer ones. Buy from a dealer instead of one of the chains (Walmart, Target), because the people there will be able to answer all your questions, plus they have repair people on site if something happens to the machine. Remember, you get what you pay for, and if you spend a little more now, you'll have something you'll be happy with longer. If you're a beginner and plan to be sewing for a long time, you'd be better off paying a little more. You may want something with a few decorative stitches, because it's nice to do a little something on collars, cuffs and pockets.

Find an old Singer Touch & Sew. You can sew through canvas and denim (numerous layers) with one of those old machines. They are really cool when it comes to filling the bobbin--you don't have to take it out of the machine and re-thread everything. You just push a button, the bobbin fills, push the button back and you are sewing again. Most all models had metal gears--made for heavy duty sewing.
Not the quietest machines, but not horrible (or maybe it is, I am just used to it).
I have the original one my mother bought me when I was 12. It is 40 years old now--LOL. I have since found a couple of others--one to keep at the cabin and another just for back up in case a machine needs some servicing. By the way, having the machines worked on is VERY rare.

Look for one on ebay.

Do not get any of the new machines. Opt for a good all metal(metal gears too)sewing machine. Singer made some good durable and easy to use machines up until about the late 70's or so. Everything of today is made of plastic and isn't built to last. The man who maintains my machine told me to never get rid of it as you can't replace it with today's standards. You can find an older one in any thrift store, sewing machine repair shop or Ebay. The one I own is a Singer 401a and it is the best one I ever had. They sell alot of these on Ebay and you can get them cheap and they are very simple, and you can get them with embroidery and buttonhole attachments if you want. If you have any further questions about this machine, let me know. I love mine! :)

Any of the sewing machines in department stores will work fine. Most of us only use straight and zig zag stitches, but it will come with more than that anyway. Don't neglect the yearly tune up and cleaning. I know it costs a lot but your machine will not work properly if it's not serviced once a year.

I bought a Kenmore (Sears) about 5 years ago and paid about $69.00. It is great. Only does about 15 stitches but does include zig zag, blind hem, and button hole stitches.
It was advertised and durable enough for denim and it certainly is. Very little has ever gone wrong with it. For the price I paid for it and for the amount I sew - Lot's it is well worth the money. Don't waste your entire bank account on a fancy machine with a built in computer. There will only be that many more parts that can break.
This one is small and easy to pick up and carry with you. My cousin wanted slip covers for her chairs in her living room. She wanted me to take the chairs to my house. I said no way... I took my machine over to her house and sat on her coffee table and zipped out arm chair covers, seat and head covers in no time.
Good luck!
