Animals get nitrogen from their food. That's how animals fit into the nitrogen cycle. Proteins are a good source of nitrogen, but some other compounds also contain nitrogen - like the DNA and RNA!

They obtain nitrogen from the plants the eat because the plants contain nitrogen which has been absorbed from the soil. They also get a small amount of nitrogen from the air in our surroundings because the air around us contains small percentages of some chemical elements and this includes nitrogen. But I do not know the specific percentage of nitrogen the air around us contains.
