Coltrane. His best stuff is simply sublime. Davis was a magnificent trumpet player and innovator, but Coltrane had more depth.

To be fair to cool_jerk, some of Trane's free jazz recordings are hard to get into.

Coltrane all the way. Not to say that I don't love Miles. Coltrane was so much more adventurous and not concerned with selling albums. This I think allowed his art to flourish.

For me the lesser of the 2 evils is Miles Davis. John Coltrane sounds like random notes. No pattern, rhythm, or anything other than screeching notes.

Miles.
Trane is good, but I like Miles because:
1) I am a trumpet player myswlf :-)
2) He kept is simple during the bebop days (you hear that in Kind Of Blue with his solos)
3) He had an innovative technique on trumpet I really can't describe. He had an amazing sound to it.

This is like asking a parent which child is their favorite! As far as I am concerned, I love them equally and unconditionally.

As for Cool_Jerk up above, go back to listening to your Kenny G and quit trying to analyze something you cannot possibly understand!
